Paper Accepted at IUI 2025

🎉 We are thrilled to announce that our full paper: “The Influence of Curiosity Traits and On-Demand Explanations in AI-Assisted Decision-Making” by Federico Maria Cau and Lucio Davide Spano, has been accepted for publication at IUI25!

🔬 Our work explores four types of on-demand explanations: Local Model-Centric, Global Data-Centric, Local/Global Model-Centric, and Hybrid Approaches. We studied how these explanations affect users’ accuracy and overreliance on AI while also examining the role of three psychological traits: Need for Cognition (NFC), Epistemic Curiosity (EC), and Curiosity and Exploration (CEI-II).

ℹ️ Results showed no significant differences among explanation types for accuracy or overreliance. While NFC, EC, and CEI-II did not significantly impact accuracy or overreliance, our analysis revealed moderate positive correlations among these traits. Further, individuals with higher NFC and CEI-II scores exhibited greater confidence, and those scoring higher on CEI-II requested AI assistance less frequently. Users seeking on-demand assistance tended to have lower confidence, suggesting AI support might sometimes undermine self-confidence.

🚀 Stay tuned for the pre-print, which will be available soon!
